Camila:
I am 17 years old. I attend August Martin High School in Jamaica Queens, New York. I am part
of the Aviation Academy in my high school. I believe I would be a great role model for Girls With
Wings because I am a very determined, hardworking and motivated young person.
I am originally from South America from a country called Chile. My parents and I moved to the
United States in 1997. Both of my parents are what inspire me to fulfill my dreams. My
motivations are many but one motivation I have is my two younger sisters. They are little but
understand everything. I want to show them that their sister is going to become something of
herself one day. I want them to be proud of me and proud of what I do. I live 2 blocks away
from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). When I moved to the United States the
planes would pass right above my house and I would say, “One day I will fly one of these
planes and travel around the world.” I have always wanted to become a pilot.
So when Girls With Wings offered this scholarship I said to myself, “this can really help me in
achieving my dreams.” Currently it is very hard for me to go to flight school because of the
expenses. Air East located in Farmingdale, Long Island is currently charging $163.50 an hour
for flying. It is very hard for them to come up with such amount of money because I do not
have a job; I have to go to school full time. The money my parents make is not enough to pay
for my flying hours. The cannot afford to pay such amount because of bills and living expenses.
In the near future I would like to join The United States Air Force. There I would like to achieve
my dream of becoming a fighter pilot and hopefully one day fly the Thunderbirds.
Winning this scholarship would really help me in many ways. One way it would help me is that
I would like to get more flight time accumulated. And it also gets me closer to fulfilling my
dreams.
