Heather:
I am nineteen years old from Youngsville, Louisiana. I aspire to be a helicopter pilot. I am
training for my private pilot’s license. I am currently enrolled in ground school. I just paid for my
first flight hour about a week ago. I think I would be a great role model to others because I am
dedicated, enthusiastic, energetic, and well-rounded. I have been through so much in the past
three years of my life. It hasn’t been the best of years but it has made me stronger in the end.
My mother had ten surgeries within a year and a half period and it was up to me to become
the mother of the house. My sister is two years younger than me and it was my duty to raise
her. My mother couldn’t keep a steady job with her being in and out of the hospital, so it was
my duty to help pay bills. My father had a steady job but it wasn’t enough to support all four of
us at the time. I got a job working as the birthday coordinator for Chuck E. Cheese’s. I was
working full-time and attending high school. I kept up decent grades, meaning B’s and C’s. I
never had the chance to figure out what I wanted to do after high school.
Well we ended up claiming bankruptcy because of all of the hospital bills we acquired. After I
graduated I used all of my graduation money and enrolled in college at South Louisiana
Community College. I was studying Early Childhood Education and Psychology. It only took one
semester for me to realize that it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After
completing that semester, I dropped out. I was dropped from my parents insurance because I
wasn’t in school. I needed full-time employment that offered benefits. I put in an application at
Rotorcraft Leasing Company in Broussard, Louisiana. I got the position as a flight
follower/dispatcher. I work seven days on and seven days off.
I am going to take this moment to explain how I got so interested in aviation. I flew in a
Boeing 737 for the first time when I was eighteen and fell in love with the feeling of being in
the air. I loved just riding in one! I saved up some money and went to Phoenix, Arizona for an
interview with Mesa Air Group to become a flight attendant. I got the position but it wasn’t a
life style that I wanted for myself. I went back home still thinking about it. I turned the position
down and started to look into flying the plane myself. Schooling was expensive and I didn’t
know anyone who could help me, or that I could even talk to about it. I was starting to give up
on my dream when I got the job at Rotorcraft…
At Rotorcraft Leasing, they like to take all new employees in an aircraft around Lafayette. The
minute I sat in the aircraft I was like a kid in a candy store. This helicopter had dual controls
and I got to sit upfront. I was so curious to see what it was like. The second we took off I got
this feeling all over inside and I knew that this had to be my career. I wanted that feeling in my
bones for the rest of my life. I got an invite from two other students, that attend the local
school, to go to an open house. I went on a beautiful day and got a demo flight in a Robinson
22. I loved it but my families’ finances weren’t in the best shape. I can’t get a loan because I
haven’t had credit long enough and I don’t have a co-signer.
I have gotten books from people I work with. I am attending ground school when I am on my
seven days off. I know it will take a while but I am willing to sacrifice. I still live at home with
my parents and I only have three bills to pay (car insurance, life insurance, and a cell phone
bill). I plan to work as hard as I can to pay for it myself. Like I said before, I am currently
working towards my private pilot’s license. I am applying for different scholarships, hoping for
luck! My motivation is the feeling I get when I fly! I love the feeling and it’s hard to explain it!
My inspiration comes from my mother because she’s overcome so many obstacles in her life.
She still stayed positive through it all and I think that is what helped her to be healthy now. I
also got inspired by people I work with, they’ve helped me through so much. I never thought I
could get this far without them.
I plan to work for Rotorcraft Leasing Company in the future doing offshore flying. I love the
south and what it is all about, so I want a job where I can stay close to home. I am hoping
that you would like to join my support group and if not, I would like you to post my story. I
want others to know that no matter how hard life can get you can overcome and make the
best of it. Also try hard and you will be blessed.
