Hope:
“For once you have tasted flight you will walk the Earth with your eyes turned skywards, for
there you have been and there you will long to return.” Leonardo da Vinci’s famous words
perfectly described the way I felt upon returning from my first Young Eagles flight. At fifteen
years of age, this twenty minute experience not only introduced me into the wonderful world
of aviation, but also served as my motivation to attend “AirVenture,” the world’s greatest
aviation celebration located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It was here that my “taste of flight” shot
sky high, enough so, that I have returned every year since.
As I watched the smoke trail transform from a straight line into a series of precisely controlled
maneuvers, I instantly said to myself, “I can do that.” That air show performer happened to
be Ms. Patty Wagstaff, who, throughout her hard work and accomplishments, has helped pave
the way for other women aviators wishing to follow in her footsteps. Her success and
dedication as an aerobatic competitor have been my inspiration to dream big and to hope that
one day that same dream will become a reality. I hope that someday I , too, will be able to be
that same inspiration that Ms. Wagstaff was to me.”
Upon high school graduation, my initial thought was to attend our local Community College,
save some money, and then transfer to a University where I would major in Pharmacy. Only
then, after working for a few years, would I be rewarded with the time and money that would
be needed to fly. However, after being sponsored to attend the EAA Air Academy in Oshkosh,
I quickly realized that my passion for flying is to great to postpone. I now know that I do not
want to put off the adventure and freedom I feel when I am soaring through the air.
With the help of EAA AirVenture, Patty Wagstaff, and the EAA Air Academy, I am now a
freshmen at the University of Dubuque, located in Dubuque, IA, majoring in Flight Operations.
I absolutely love the training and feel one hundred percent that this is where I belong! As I
gain additional experience, there are many options available to me and different branches that
I wish to explore. While I am still in school, I would like to Flight Instruct as much as possible.
In doing this, I will gain additional experience, help others, and log time that will be needed to
land a job. My plans for the future are to obtain my Airline Transport Pilot License and fly for
the Airlines or a Corporate Company. As I stated before, I would love to become involved in
learning how to fly in one of the most thrilling and challenging sports of all; aerobatics. Not
only does it give pilots a better understanding of how to recover from emergency situations,
but it also looks like a thrilling experience! As far fetched as it may seem, my goal is to
someday fly in competitions and perform at air shows.
I believe that I can be a great role model for “Girls With Wings” because I enjoy getting others
interested in aviation, whether it is helping out at Young Eagle Rallies or encouraging my
younger sisters to go with me to an air show. My “go-getter” personality, discipline, and
dedication will all be useful when it comes time to try and get other girls interested in aviation.
I want them to know that if they set their mind to it, anything is possible. Do not let anyone
say that you are not good enough to do something because chances are, you possess the
ability to excel far beyond even your own expectations. Although I am just learning, I can
already tell that the end result is going to be much better than I ever expected!
A man by the name of Barrington Irving once said, “We have to step back and help kids find
ways of achieving the things we’re encouraging them to dream about.” I believe that the
“Girls With Wings” Scholarship is a perfect example of what Irving is trying to say. This
organization is able to provide others with a great opportunity to further their education of
flight With these aspirations in mind I am more than excited to continue with my flight
training. Thank you for considering me as a candidate for the Scholarship that you are offering.
