Katelynn:
My first introduction to aviation and one of my many inspirations, was a young eagles flight.
My family and I met Vern Mauk, the president of the local EAA CH 500 club during The Wings of
Freedom air show at the Massena New York airport. Vern introduced us to Jim Parks, also a
member. Jim gladly gave most of my family and me a ride in his Cessna 170A.
Even before we were given a ride, my dad was very interested in flying. He read magazines
and talked about airplanes with us. I have ten brothers and sisters. I am the oldest,
seventeen years old and Amy is the youngest, four months old. We decided the best way for
all of us to get involved in flying affordably would be to have one of us become a flight
instructor. I decided to take on the challenge. At school I have been a teachers assistant for
the last three years for my technology teacher and enjoyed teaching people. I like to learn
and after my young eagles flight I realized learning to fly was a challenge I did not want to
pass up!
I believe I have many role model qualities. I am not afraid to try something new and to be
different. I diversify my classes, taking art, technology, science, and wilderness studies
classes as electives. By taking a variedly of classes I have learned many new skills like:
survival in the wilderness, fabricating projects out of wood and metal, small engine repair,
leadership and teamwork. I see each class as a way to challenge myself, learn from others,
and from my mistakes. In wilderness studies I have helped plan, organize and lead many 1-5
day trips, hiking, snow shoeing and even canoeing. On these trips it was important to be
prepared for the unexpected, like changes in the weather and emergencies. I enjoy being a
leader and helping people learn!
Another challenge that has inspired me is community service. At my local library in Hopkinton, I
volunteer my time as a librarian two times a week. I am also the secretary of the friends of
the Hopkinton library group. We brainstorm together at the library and come up with unique
ways to fundraise and promote reading. This year we went to Peru N.Y. and bought 22,000
pounds of apples with donated money from Wal-Mart and other local businesses. The library
bought the apples whole sale and sold them at cost to help out the community. Other
community services I have helped with are the town’s annual summer fest, handing food out
at the food pantry, and helping with the EAA CH 500 clubs annual fly in breakfast. We had the
fly in breakfast at the end of the summer in Massena New York at the hanger. I think I flipped
at least 1,000 pancakes, my little brother Michael poured milk and orange juice into cups. We
were all afraid he was going to make a mess, but he would not give up his job!
I am also involved in school and have fundraised for my class. One time I made up catalogs to
sell holiday cards that my mother and I had painted. I have been painting for quite awhile and
have even painted custom pictures for my teachers. The first custom picture I painted was a
picture of a Corvette for my English teacher.
When you are growing up you look up to your parents and teachers. When my family and I
started looking into aviation I talked about it in school. I was delighted to hear that a lot of my
teachers were also interested in aviation and they said that they always wanted to fly. This
really sparked my interest. They inspired me to try out something that they had always
dreamed of!
When my family joined the local EAA CH 500 club we talked to the pilots. All the pilots we
talked to were enthusiastic and were glade to have someone to share their love of flying. One
member, Bob Forbs, is actually building his own plane, a Bush Caddy. My dad, who has
inspired me the most, also thought it would be great to build a plane. We have decided that
building a Zenith Air CH 701 will be one of my family’s future plans. We have started to clear
some of our woods for a landing strip. In the future we would like to have a landing strip at
our house. Since the CH 701 is a STOL airplane which requires a short take off and landing
distance it will be able to land at our strip, which when cleared will be 1,200 feet. My family is
very supportive of my goal and is working hard to get started in aviation.
My motivation to be involved in aviation has come from my family and eager pilots. All of my
family is excited about flying and I will enjoy teaching them. My dad especially cannot wait to
get his private pilots license from me. Last fall I took the first AeroScholars course. This was
before I begin taking flight lessons. I took the course because I though it would help me with
ground school and more importantly to test out the theories of flight. I found out that I
enjoyed the combination of Bernoulli’s principal, as velocity of a fluid increases, it’s pressure
decreases, along with Newton’s laws of motion and others. Then once I took my introductory
flight I found out the thrill of flight; it’s new boundaries, limits, and three-dimensional sense
that is unlike ground travel! The thing about my introductory flight that really made me have a
passion for flight was when my flight instructor, Darren Mesibov, let me take off in the Cessna
150. He explained the steps, and then gave me the controls, taking hold of the controls and
taking off for my first time really gave me a great feeling! This affected me so much that when I
become an instructor, I am also going to let my students take off on their first flight.
I am enjoying my lessons at Potsdam and look forward to them every week. I have seven
hours so far in my logbook and am trying to take one lesson a week. My future plans are to
become a certified flight instructor. My entire family is looking forward to the completion of my
goal! Once I get my instructor rating, I am going to teach my family to fly and to start
instructing under the local instructor. After airplane instructor I would like to eventually get my
helicopter rating. I might even go as far as certified flight instructor in helicopters as well and
airplanes. I have never flown in a helicopter, but have read about them. I like the way they
are straightforward when they take off- up and away! The local instructor, Darren Mesibov is
thinking of starting a charter service and I was thinking of getting evolved with it too. Also in
school I have taken many photography classes and I think it would be fun to take aerial
photographs. All in all I think I can make an enjoyable career with aviation!
The Girls with Wings scholarship is encouraging for beginner pilots. It is inspiring to have a
group that supports you and your quest to become a pilot! I think the Girls with Wings Club is
great, it gets women involved in aviation. It is creating a community of women who can share
their views and ideas with each other!
