Natalie:

When I was just a wee tot,
I dreamt of piloting planes a lot.

Visiting the airport was such a special treat,
Whether I’d be flying away, or staying on my feet.

When riding in a plane, I’ve always watched the wing,
But I soon learned that that’s not the only thing that makes a plane sing!

When I went to college, I learned to be a teacher,
Yet inside myself, I’ve always been a flying creature.

One summer, I worked at a Girl Scout Camp,
The girls thought I was quite the champ.

I led the Discover Aviation week,
Flying the plane was our excitement peak!

After that, I just knew,
Exactly what I have to do!
I’m a teacher, but I can be a pilot too!

I teach special education in a small town. My students all have learning disabilities and are
generally quite unenthusiastic about learning. I have noticed that in small towns, people seem
to not want to go too far outside the box, and will fall into what their community expects of
them, regardless of their true desires. I seek to break that barrier and show the young people
of that community that anything is possible when it is what you truly desire.

When I was a young teenager, my aunt took me to Women’s Aviation Day in Tucson, and a
woman took us for a short plane ride around town. I remember the respect and admiration I
had for that female pilot, and I think I could be the woman that young girls look up to as well.

As a teacher, I am often trying to think outside the box and using creative strategies to get
kids learning. When I learn to fly a plane, I plan to use the lessons that I’m learning to
implement lessons in my classroom. As a woman interested in a male dominant field, I hope to
inspire students to do what makes them happiest. Even if I don’t get a girl to pursue a career
in aviation, I hope to get girls excited about trying new things and following their dreams.

One of my classroom rules is to live life so you have no regrets, well, I sure would regret not
getting my pilot’s license, so I’m going for it, and not letting anything get in my way. That is the
determination I teach in my classroom, and that is a rule I live by, so to get the chance to
demonstrate it for my students would be a reward in itself.

Because I am a teacher, I have my summers free and would like to get involved in different
activities and organizations that promote females in aviation during that time. I feel it is
important to share one’s gifts and talents with others, and I think I am in a great position to
share with young people especially.

I teach students to always do their best,
So now it’s time to put myself to the test.

My class has promised to support my plight,
Until I have finally achieved my solo flight.

What better way to learn this skill,
Than to take young people along for the learning thrill?
