Pilot/A&P/Aerospace Engineering Student

I am an aerospace engineering student at Saint Louis Univ. I have 2 dogs
and 3 cats back home. I am from MD. I am an A&P (Aviation Mechanic) and
a private pilot. I have 2 sisters.

Growing up my parents always told us we could do whatever we wanted.
My middle sister, Sarah, got her private and took me flying and I knew then
in was something I wanted to do.

What have I learned about becoming A&P/Pilot/Engineer? I learned you
have to be willing to work for it because no one is going to give it to you
and that it is ok to stand out and do something different.

I learned to fly in MD at Freeway Aviation. I learned in a Cessna 152 and
then a Cessna 172. I have flown a J3 cub also.

I am an aerospace engineer and I got my private so I could fly on my own
and hope to own a plane one day. I also think that both my private and
A&P help me as an engineer. I also one day hope to be an astronaut so
they help me to advance toward my goal.

I realized that I didn't want to fly for a living and I always thought it would
be neat to know how all the systems work together on such complex and
advanced technologies. I was reassured I was doing the right thing after
having the time of my life during an internship with Boeing.

The best part of my job is getting to play with airplanes everyday. I also
love talking to people in aviation and meeting new people everyday. They
are so passionate and inspiring. I love hearing their stories.

I was at an airshow with another Women in Aviation member awing over a
plane when a father and son came up to the plane and after overhearing
our aviation speak asked if we were pilots. We told him “yes” and he told
his son "hey, these girls are pilots!" The little boy looked up at us with such
awe that I was floored. I didn't realize that I was now someone else was
looking up to! I'm so used to looking up to everyone else and their
accomplishments!

Q        What role do skills in Math, Science, Engineering and Technology
play in supporting your job?

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills are everything. You must
know them and know them well. I use them everyday.

Q        What activities do you suggest for young children or adults to
prepare them for a career like yours?

I suggest extracurricular activities and of course stay up with the math and
sciences. But you need to be diverse and offer something special in this
competitive field.
