Private pilot
I am a teacher in a preschool for 3-4 years old, and also a Girl Scout leader
for the juniors in the Community Outreach program. I also work
overnights at SAC museum. While not working, I live in Carter Lake, Iowa.
I volunteer with the EAA Young Eagle program, and volunteer my time with
several organizations including Soldier Angels. During my free time, I do
Polynesian dance, and spend time with my two babies: I have two dogs - a
purebred beagle Belle, and a beagle/dachshund mix Shadow.
I remember going to air shows, thinking how cool and exciting it would be
to be flying an in airshow. I remember going to aviation museums and
thinking I could do that one day. I live by the airport, and I was constantly
looking up in the sky.
I became a private pilot 3 years ago My biggest setback was having
different instructors, and financial reasons, as I was just getting back on
my feet. But I finally did it, and now I look back, and think that this was
the best investment I could have made, as I will always remember my first
solo, the day I passed my checkride.
I learned how to fly at the Omaha Flight Academy in Omaha, Nebraska. I
fly a Cessna 172, a Piper Cherokee, and a Cessna 152. I competed in two
air races in the past two years, the Nebraska Make-A-Wish fly-in in which I
received 2nd place in flight planning. I also competed in the all female Air
Race Classic which is the longest running cross country air race for females
dating back to 1929, also formally known as the Powder Puff Derby. I
learned so much about myself when it comes to my flying while doing
these races.
Flying is a hobby right now, but I am working on my instrument and
hopefully after that, work on my commercial rating.
In my careers, I love the fact in preschool, I can open the eyes of young
children to all the possibilities that there are for the younger generation.
At my girl scout job, I love working with the 4-6 graders, and opening
their eyes that there are more and more possibilities for girls now then
there was when I was growing up and that it doesn't matter where you
grow up, that the possibilities are endless.
I get reactions every time I see people I used to hang out with, when I tell
them that I got my pilot certificate now. It's even funnier when I tell them
I have competed in air racing, and planning on doing the Air Race Classic
this year again. I think the funniest reaction was at my workplace, when
the pilot I co-piloted for showed up at my work to drop off some books
for an upcoming race. The lady working the front desk was surprised, as
she had no clue that I was a pilot, and I had been working there for over a
year.
What role do skills in math, science, engineering and technology play in
supporting your job? Math, Science and Technology are becoming more in
demand. I have set up science center for my little kids, as I think science
is important as we use it almost everyday. Technology is ever changing
and it's important that we keep up with the times. I look back and I think
just how much technology has changed from when I was growing up, like
the computers are getting smaller and quicker.
My future plans is to get my commercial rating, and hopefully start working
on aerobatics or formation flying, as I think this is the way I want to use
my pilot's license, or work for a smaller business as a pilot.
Using aviation to entertain and educate girls about their limitless opportunities...
