Aircraft Dispatcher

Hi, My name is Tara and I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I am not
married and don’t have any children, but I do have two tea cup
(Tiny) poodles!

I am a dispatcher for Flight Options, LLC, where
Lynda is a
pilot. An aircraft dispatcher has many responsibilities and has
to be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (just like
pilots). Dispatchers have joint responsibility with the pilots for
the safety and operational control of flights under their
guidance according to their company’s regulations.

My love of aviation began because I grew up 5 min away from
the Youngstown Air Base and was surrounded by C130's
everyday. My Uncle is a pilot along with my best friend (since I
was 5). Kevin Baldwin (My Fiancé, Best friend, and Co-Worker)
helped convince me that this job was something I could do.
Kevin has his private pilot’s license and he is also employed at
Flight Options LLC as a dispatcher. Being that my background
is in education and not aviation there were a lot of bumps in
the road. If there is anything I can tell you girls, is that you
can do anything that you put your mind to! I have not trained
as a pilot, but my Fiancé has taught me a lot in case of
emergencies. I became a dispatcher because I am a people
person and I love to talk. It is also the only job where you can
be all over the world in a day and never leave your desk.

My duties as a dispatcher is to brief the crews of trips, weather
delays, maintenance issues, and passenger delays; giving
them information such as how many Passengers, printing
charts, etc. *Charts are pilot tools that allow you to know
runway conditions, lengths, airport information, etc.* I am on
the phone all day long with crew members and I love it. This
gives me the opportunity to see the careers of the people in,
and outside, of the OCC *Operations Control Center* from
another perspective.

I enjoy my job because I get to work with some of the most talented
people in the world. I work with people who fly all over the USA. It's
great. I also get to monitor trips with famous people on them. :o)
The best part of my is that I talk to people all day long. I learn
something new every single day. It may be weather related,
passenger related, crew member related, or new rules and
regulations. My days at Flight Options LLC are always educational.

People always are shocked that I am a dispatcher because of my
background. I have never been in Aviation till now. I would not
change it for the world though. It has made me a well rounded
educated woman. Ladies, there are many opportunities in Aviation
and some even allow you to stay on the ground.

Bonus: Math is very important when it comes to telling time. Why
you might ask? Because in Aviation fields you use military time and
Zulu time also known as Z time. Military time is as follows: AM is just
the # followed by zeros. (i.e.: 0100, 0200, 1100, 1200). PM you just
add 12 to the # (i.e.: 1:00 PM = 1300 / 2:00 PM =1400 / 3:00 =
1500) Z time is based on the time zone you are in. Eastern, Central,
Mountain, and Pacific. Each of these times zones have different times,
so Z time allows you to always be consistent when traveling. For
example. If you were in Ohio (Eastern) and you were traveling to
Chicago (Central) @ 2000L (8:00PM) your Z time would be 0100Z .
0100Z is a universal time.

What activities do I suggest for young children or young adults to prepare them for a career like mine? Have your parents
look into aviation books at the library, or on the internet. You can learn things like the Phonetic Alphabet, Zulu time, Military Time,
Nautical and Statute Miles, Time Zones, and the Map of the United States. If you have any questions on any of these items you can
contact me at
