In 2001, a good friend of mine (a fellow pilot) was about to give birth to a
future aviatrix. I spent hours looking on the Internet for something, anything,
to give a baby girl that had even just a picture of an airplane. For years, I had
been buying my nieces anything in Pilot Gift shops that was even remotely
girlish, but I was getting frustrated that there seemed to be nothing specifically
designed for girls.

I knew there were plenty of female pilots, plenty of male pilots with daughters,
flight attendants, mechanics, dispatchers and other aviation employees and
enthusiasts who must want to buy girls the same items that they were buying
for boys, but in the styles that little girls like. I wondered how it was possible
that we had gone through 100 years of flight and were virtually ignoring our
future generations of female pilots.

Since
being a pilot is what I know, I started "Violet Pilot" in the summer of
2001. I unfortunately did not trademark the name, and a very similar name was
subsequently registered by an author. This turned out to be very fortunate. I
had received so much input from the general public desiring emphasis on other
aviation professions that I decided to use the name Girls With Wings. GWW
includes current women in aviation fields, and the future ones. It also refers to
encouraging girls to have wings no matter their dreams.

Please forgive my seeming bias towards pilots. I hope to include more aviation
careers and hobbies, with the help of the rest of the aviation community. The
retail sales for the Girls With Wings project are handled by
Very Important
Pilots, LLC, which has a store selling licensed GWW merchandise. We see great
things ahead for future generations in aviation.

We hope you will join us!
"Aviation is still considered a
man's world by many. The
time to reach young ladies is
during their first years of
school. Research has shown
that although children may
change their minds several
times about their eventual
careers, the possibilities of
them selecting a non-
traditional role must be
nurtured at an early age."
